Coffee face scrub

One of the most popular and most effective types of scrubs is coffee scrub. In combination with various additional substances, coffee grounds or ground beans can work wonders.

The content of the article:

How the coffee scrub works

The effect of coffee scrub on facial skin is based on simple mechanical principles. After mechanical action, keratinized skin cells are separated from the tissue. To replace them, the dermis “grows” new ones. In addition, when coffee is used, its unique properties also come into play. Cells are affected by:

Caffeine – accelerates metabolism, increases skin tone and enhances the protective properties of the dermis;
antioxidants – increase skin elasticity;
vitamin E – is able to fight age spots and provide an SPF effect;
stearins – moisturize the skin and help retain moisture in it;
polyphenols – promote the production of collagen in tissues;
carotenoids – contribute to the establishment of a healthy skin color (eliminate yellowness and grayness);
chlorogenic acid – reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

All these substances, together with the mechanical effect, have an amazing effect on the skin. Recently, coffee face scrubs made with the addition of exclusively natural ingredients have become increasingly popular. They are quite expensive, but anyone can prepare them at home.

Homemade coffee scrub recipes

Scrub made from cake and ground grains

Cake is the grounds that remain after making coffee. At first glance, the cake may be enough to prepare a scrub (after all, ground grains are available). However, some cosmetologists claim that when preparing coffee, their beans remove many beneficial substances that the skin needs. Thus, a scrub made from coffee grounds is much less effective. Therefore, experts recommend using coffee that meets the following conditions to prepare the product:

Fine or medium ground roasted coffee;
no flavorings;
no additives or preservatives.

It is strictly forbidden to use instant coffee to prepare scrubs. It can harm the delicate skin of the face. A facial scrub made from coffee grounds will be less beneficial, but will also bring a positive effect. To achieve maximum benefits, you must use unbrewed ground coffee.

Products for different skin types

Different skin types require different approaches. A coffee scrub for oily skin should be prepared using additional ingredients that do not have a comedogenic effect and cannot clog pores. It is not recommended to add various oils (including essential oils) when making such a product. Coffee itself is not capable of harming oily skin.

A coffee scrub for dry skin, on the contrary, requires the addition of additional moisturizers. A good combination is to combine coffee beans and coconut oil or cocoa butter. They moisturize the skin well after mechanical exposure to abrasive particles.

In general, a face scrub made from ground coffee is suitable for use on both dry and oily or combination skin.

Coffee and salt

Coffee and salt scrub is one of the most popular. However, it is most often used for the skin of the body. Salt, when paired with coffee, has a powerful anti-cellulite effect. However, this recipe can also be used on the face. Please note that salt for cooking should be used exclusively finely ground. Large salt particles can injure delicate facial skin.

The recipe for making such a scrub can be as follows:

1 tablespoon coffee;
60 grams of sea salt;
Oil suitable for your skin type (for example, grape seed oil - 40 ml).

This scrub will have a cleansing and nourishing effect on the dermis.
Before preparing a coffee-salt scrub, you should be aware that tingling and mild burning may occur when applying it. Cosmetologists do not recommend using products containing salt for sensitive skin.

Coffee and sugar

Sugar is often used as an alternative to coffee and salt for making scrubs. It is much more delicate than salt. However, you can use this ingredient in combination with coffee.

Sugar has no additional benefits for the skin. It simply acts as an abrasive element. The recipe for making a scrub from sugar and coffee can be approximately the same as for coffee and salt.

A much healthier alternative to a coffee-sugar scrub is a coffee-honey scrub. Honey has a powerful antioxidant effect. Together with the active substances of coffee, it has a rejuvenating effect. In addition, honey, with its viscosity, is a good base for the preparation of cosmetics. The only practically inconvenient point is the difficulty of washing off such a product (undiluted honey is quite difficult to wash off).

Coffee and cream

A scrub made from coffee and cream is the easiest to prepare. The recipe for its preparation is quite simple - you need to add ground coffee to the moisturizer. The application procedure is the same as when using other scrubs. It is believed that the active ingredients of the cream are enhanced significantly by the mechanical opening of cells.

Combination recipes

Additional combination recipes are also widely popular. The most popular and effective among them are:

Remedy using coffee, salt and yogurt;
Citrus coffee scrub;
Clay product for problem skin;
Coffee and olive oil scrub;
Remedy with egg white and coffee.

Experts advise leaving a scrub using clay on the skin for 5 minutes. Clay has an anti-inflammatory effect on exposed skin cells. This helps fight acne and inflammation. However, it should be noted that after using this product, the skin may seem slightly dry to the owner. This is a consequence of the drying effect of clay. Adding egg white to a home remedy can also have a similar effect. After washing off such a scrub, you should definitely apply a moisturizer.

Citrus coffee scrub is known for its tonic effect. It increases the metabolic rate in skin cells, which helps improve its tone and prolong youth. The most popular coffee-citrus scrub is in terms of combating subcutaneous fat.

General rules of use

A separate issue is the grinding of the coffee used. Particles that are too coarse can injure dermal cells and do more harm than good. Slurry in the form of coffee that is too finely ground will also not bring the desired effect. Therefore, cosmetologists recommend using medium-grinded raw materials.

To obtain the correct effect from the procedure, it must be carried out in several stages:
preparing the face (skin should be warm) - for this you can wash your face or take a steam bath;
applying the scrub along the massage lines with light, smooth movements (be sure to avoid the area around the eyes);
treatment of the face in this way for 3-4 minutes;
removing mass from the face with warm water;
wiping your face;
applying nourishing cream.

Some consider it important to properly wipe your face after the procedure. This should be done with a soft towel that is used exclusively for the face. In Asian skincare culture, it is believed that water should be removed from the face after washing no later than 5 seconds. Delay contributes to dry skin and early aging.
You should wash your face after coffee scrubbing with warm or cool water. Too hot water will open the pores and bacteria can enter there when you dry your skin. This may contribute to the formation of acne.

Applying nourishing cream is not always a necessary step. So, in the case of preparing a product for dry skin with the addition of a large amount of oils, applying a nourishing product may even be unnecessary.

Some experts recommend preparing a hot coffee scrub (with heating the raw materials). However, the use of hot substances is strictly contraindicated for sensitive skin. In addition, incorrectly selected scrub temperature can harm the skin and injure it. Therefore, preparing hot coffee scrubs at home is not recommended.

Cosmetologists do not advise storing the prepared product for a long time. The best option is to prepare it immediately before use. The fact is that oils or other additional ingredients added to the scrub may be prone to rapid loss of beneficial properties. In addition, coffee can simply go bad if stored for a long time.

Coffee facial scrub is an excellent remedy that helps fight dry skin and its gray color. This procedure can also help fight wrinkles and prolong the youth of the face.
