Expiration date of cosmetics after opening. Checking your cosmetic bag: how long can you store cosmetics? Reduce pores on face

To extend the shelf life of lipstick, it is best to store it in the refrigerator.

Indeed, the shelf life of lipstick is quite long, about 1-1.5 years. But I think you shouldn’t store lipstick for so long, but change it much earlier. For example, I haven’t used lipstick for more than 6 months. Because it is in a warm room, the lipstick begins to deteriorate faster, rolls into lumps, and the smell changes, therefore, this lipstick cannot be used. Since it is used on the lips, and therefore enters the body.

But it’s still not worth risking your health for the sake of throwing away expensive lipstick.

I try not to buy a lot of different lipsticks, but take only a couple so that I can use them in a short time.

The maximum shelf life of lipstick is about a year after opening. To keep lipstick longer, you need to store it in a cool place. If you used lipstick during colds or herpes on the lips, it is better to change the lipstick. Lipstick is an item for personal use, no one should use lipstick except you.

If you apply lipstick to your lips with a special brush, which you then wash and dry, and store the lipstick itself in the refrigerator, then it will not deteriorate even in 3 years. And if you paint your lips without a brush, then the shelf life is reduced to a year, and if the lipstick is left in the sun, then after 3 months you can throw it away.

The shelf life of lipstick varies among different manufacturers, but basically it is a three-year warranty from the date of production, but after opening the lipstick, the maximum period of use is up to one year, no more. It is advisable to update your lipstick once every six months.

The expiration date of the lipstick must be indicated on the packaging. After you start using it, the shelf life is no more than 3-4 months.

If stored incorrectly (on a windowsill, in the sun), it can spoil much earlier and have a changed smell and taste.

Free legal advice:

I heard that all opened cosmetics should be stored for no more than a year, but it is worth remembering that they are full of pathogenic flora after just a month. But not everyone can afford to update all their cosmetics once a month.

Therefore, it is better to use a special brush for application and store lipstick in a cool place.

She collects pathogenic flora from our hands and lips.

The shelf life of lipstick can be from 1 to 3 years. It all depends on the composition. But as soon as you open the bottle of lipstick and start using it, the shelf life of such lipstick is reduced to 4 months. Then oxidative processes begin. It is better if such lipstick does not enter the body. After all, 90 percent still ends up in the stomach.

The shelf life of lipstick is up to three years. But that’s if you store it in the refrigerator. But who stores it there?

Free legal advice:

And if you carry it with you everywhere in your purse and don’t use a brush to apply lipstick, then the lipstick will only last 3 months

In general, lipstick does not like the sun and there is no place for it on the windowsill near the radiator.

Each manufacturer gives a different expiration date for their lipstick. Usually this is from one to two years. If the lipstick is of high quality, then even after its expiration date it can be used. The main thing is that basic hygiene is maintained and that only one person uses this lipstick.

Signs of lipstick expiration date

The expiration date on lipsticks from well-known brands is not always indicated in numbers; you can often check whether decorative cosmetics are suitable for use using a special code. Almost every company uses digital encryption, Roman numerals or letter markings to indicate the shelf life of lipsticks and glosses. This code can be entered on the website of the lipstick manufacturer, the system will automatically display all the information about the purchased product. Including shelf life and production date of cosmetics.

Free legal advice:

Remember that expired cosmetics can cause rashes and allergic reactions. And although they say that beauty requires sacrifice, there is definitely no need to use lipstick after its expiration date.

How long does lipstick last?

When purchasing decorative cosmetics, be sure to pay attention to their shelf life. However, you need to use lipstick correctly so that it lasts as long as possible. It is recommended to apply the product with a brush. Tighten the cap well and do not leave the lipstick near heating appliances or in the sun. If lip gloss or lipstick has been left in the bright sun for some time, you can use such products for at most three months. It’s worth throwing away your lipstick and not risking your health if the cosmetic product has dried out, acquired a foreign odor, or changed color.

Does he exist?

Like any cosmetic product, lipstick or lip gloss is a combination of various chemicals.

Over time, some of them enter into chemical reactions with oxygen or simply oxidize.

Therefore, sooner or later, any lipstick or lip gloss becomes unusable due to drying or deterioration.

Manufacturers are trying to increase the shelf life of cosmetics by introducing substances that are resistant to oxidation, but despite this, any lipstick has a shelf life set by the manufacturer.

Free legal advice:

What does it depend on?

The shelf life of lipstick or lip gloss depends on the components used in its composition. For example, if castor oil, which is resistant to oxidation, is added to a solid lipstick base, then the shelf life of the cosmetic product increases.

The more human-safe antioxidants a lipstick or gloss contains, the longer it will last. Preservatives added to cosmetics serve the same purposes.

The types of cosmetics also matter: lipstick will last slightly longer than lip gloss.

Naturally, unopened lipstick has a longer shelf life than one that has already been used.

Important factors are also:

Free legal advice:

  • application methods;
  • storage conditions;
  • maintaining hygiene (lipstick lent to a friend will “live” less than one that was used by only one person).

What do GOSTs say?

In Russia and the CIS countries, there are quality standards according to which cosmetics, including lipstick and lip gloss, are produced, stored and transported. These standards include:

  • GOST R5 “Products of decorative cosmetics on a fat-wax basis. General technical conditions";
  • GOST2 “Products of decorative cosmetics on a fat-wax basis. General technical conditions".

According to them, the shelf life of specific items of decorative cosmetics, including lipstick and gloss, is set by the manufacturer.

How long can I store before and after opening the package?

All manufacturers indicate the expiration date before use on the packaging, and after opening, most.

Free legal advice:

You can navigate the expiration date of a cosmetic product by looking at the image of an open jar on the cosmetics packaging.

Standard expiration dates for various types of decorative cosmetics are:

  • for solid lipstick - about 3 years before opening the tube and 1 year after starting use;
  • for liquid lip gloss - 3 years before opening the package and months after;
  • lipstick pencil - 3 years before opening and 18 months after;
  • lipstick markers - 3 years before use and 1 year after;
  • for tint - 36 months from the date of production until opening and 12 months after;
  • lipstick-varnish - 3 years before opening and 12 months after;
  • hygienic lipstick and lip balm - standard 3 years before use and 12 months after;
  • for liquid matte lipstick - 36 months before use and 12 after.

However, the shelf life of lip products from different manufacturers may vary.

What is the expiration date for popular manufacturers?

Shelf life of the most famous manufacturers of decorative cosmetics for lips on the Russian market:

Free legal advice:

  1. Inexpensive lipsticks Avon (Avon) and Oriflame (Oriflame) have a shelf life established by the manufacturers of 3 years.
  2. For Dior lipstick, the shelf life is 18 months from the date of production.
  3. For Maybelline lipstick, the shelf life is set by the manufacturer at 36 months.
  4. L’Oreal lipstick does not stand out from its peers and can also be used for up to 36 months from the production date.
  5. Pupa lipstick has a shelf life of up to 24 months from the date of production.
  6. Faberlic lipstick can be used for 24 months.

Thus, the shelf life of lipsticks from various brands of manufacturers almost never exceeds 36 months, and some companies reduce it to 2 or 1.5 years.

After opening the package, according to the manufacturers' plans, you must stop using the lipstick after 1 year.

How to store it correctly?

Lipstick is usually stored at room temperature. Like any other decorative cosmetics, lipstick should be protected from sunlight, moisture and placement near sources of high temperatures.

Another prerequisite is to remember to close the cap tightly after use.

Can it be kept in the refrigerator?

Storage in the refrigerator can slightly extend the shelf life of lipstick, which increases by about 1.5 times compared to storage at room temperature.

Free legal advice:

However, temperature changes have a detrimental effect on lip cosmetics, so placing lipstick in the refrigerator once will lead to the fact that it will have to be stored in it constantly, otherwise it will quickly deteriorate.

What happens over time?

Lipstick is a contact product, so when stored for a long time, it becomes a real breeding ground for germs. Also, during long-term storage, the structure of the lipstick may be damaged and its chemical composition may change.

Sooner or later, the components of decorative cosmetics oxidize under the influence of oxygen and become unusable.

How can you tell if your lipstick has gone bad?

Since lipstick necessarily contains oils and various fats, an unpleasant odor coming from the cosmetic product can signal that it has deteriorated.

Dried and cracked or, conversely, leaking lipstick is definitely not suitable for use and should be thrown in the trash. The following may also indicate that a cosmetic product has deteriorated:

Free legal advice:

  • changed taste or color;
  • formation of white plaque;
  • the appearance of liquid droplets on the surface of a decorative product.

If the lipstick does not apply well to the lips, creases, or becomes too dry or sticky, then it has deteriorated and is no longer suitable for use.

How can you tell if thermal paste has gone bad? Read about it here.

Is it dangerous to use expired?

Many people believe that there is nothing wrong with using expired lipstick, but this opinion is extremely wrong. In addition to reducing its decorative functions and benefits, such a product can pose a threat to health.

The abundance of microbes on old lipstick can lead to infections of the skin of the lips, and expired components can cause allergic reactions.

One of the most unpleasant consequences of using expired decorative lip products is the development of cheilitis, an allergic disease characterized by lip fissures, detachment of the upper epidermis and redness of the lip border.

Lipstick, lip gloss and other types of decorative lip cosmetics are those cosmetics whose expiration dates must be strictly observed.

Free legal advice:

Since lipstick is applied to the border of the mucous membrane, and a considerable amount of it involuntarily gets inside, you need to use only the products within their expiration date.

Expiration date of cosmetics

The shelf life of cosmetics decreases sharply as soon as the product is opened - conditions are created for increased bacterial activity.

The manufacturer is required to indicate this information about the expiration date of a cosmetic product, so strictly adhere to the recommendations on the packaging.

Free legal advice:

Fulfilling these requirements may not be very convenient for you, but you must take into account that sunlight and heat lead to the decomposition of preservatives that help fight microbes.

Also, never use makeup if you have an eye infection. Bacteria can spread and fester, infecting everything you touch. Strictly follow the rules: never use other people's makeup products. And finally, most importantly, do not use makeup products if you notice a change in color or smell.

Expiration dates after opening

Below is a summary list of the suitability of cosmetic products:

Nail polish - up to 3 months

Foundation 0.5-1 year, oil-based, shelf life up to 18 months;

Free legal advice:

Shadows for vekgod;

Contour pencil - 1(2) years;

Liquid eyeliner of the month;

Lipstick or lip gloss - 1(2) years.

What to do if the expiration date is not indicated? Real cosmetics have a longer shelf life and can be used for even more than 30 months.

Free legal advice:

Does your foundation smell like motor oil, but your mascara makes you cry? So it's time to update your makeup bag.

All cosmetics contain preservatives, but even these eventually have an expiration date. And expired cosmetics can become a source of bacteria that can cause eye infections, acne and other unpleasant complications.

Liquid foundation

Shelf life - up to two years.

Water-based cosmetics are usually stored no more than a year: Water evaporates over time and bacteria can begin to multiply in the product. Alcohol-containing components significantly extend the “life” of cosmetics. But natural components (oils, extracts), which are both useful and effective, shorten its service life and require special storage conditions - in a dark and cool place.

Free legal advice:

Solid cream foundations.

Shelf life is two to three years. Pay close attention to changes in the texture of the product. Sometimes, as a result of long-term storage, foundation begins to bubble, and the solid base cracks and becomes dry. If the product does not apply evenly to the skin, it is time to throw it away. Foundation should be stored at room temperature.

The shelf life of lipstick is up to three years. If your lipstick is dry and no longer glides on your lips, it's time to find a replacement!

Another “telling” sign is an unpleasant sticky feeling on the lips, or an unusual strong smell.

It is better to store lipstick in the refrigerator - this way it will last you longer.

Free legal advice:

Shelf life - up to three years. Compact cosmetics gradually become oily from contact with the skin of the face, so before using eye shadow or blush, it is recommended to remove the greasy film from the surface. Compact eye shadows are the most durable because there are no sebaceous glands on the eyelids that secrete sebum, which contaminates compact cosmetics.

The shelf life of the mascara is three months and no exceptions!

Mascara is often a breeding ground for bacteria that cause eye infections. If you develop an eye infection, stop using mascara immediately.

Shelf life is indefinite, up to several years. Remember to always clean your pencil every time before sharpening it. It is recommended to wipe the pencil sharpener with alcohol after each use. Get rid of the pencil as soon as you notice a change in its texture or smell, advises interlinks.ru

Creams, gels and lotions are also cosmetic items. If you use expired cosmetics, various allergic reactions are possible: itching, redness and even the development of dermatitis.

Free legal advice:

Therefore, do not use cosmetics for more than 6 months after opening the package;

Choose products with a dispenser so you don’t have to put your hands into the tube;

Store cosmetics in a dry and cool place, the bathroom is not suitable for this;

The appearance of an unpleasant odor, separation of the cream, changes in viscosity, consistency and density of the mass, and in some cases, a change in the color of the product should alert you and make you think about its further use.

Most likely, the cosmetic product has become unusable and needs to be thrown away.

Labeling of cosmetics

12 months after opening.

24 months, marking 24M.

If the expiration date is less than 30 months, then the expiration date is indicated, for example, Exp 06/use until June 2014 (Expiry translated from English as “expire”). In German you can find the phrase Verwendbar bis - use before, although this applies primarily to medicines.

According to statistics, women suffer from eyelid diseases more often than men. Wearing makeup inevitably puts you in contact with your eyelids and eyelashes, so having bacteria on your fingers or makeup brushes greatly increases the risk of infection in the delicate eye area. To prevent this from happening:

Do not forget to wash all brushes and sponges once a week with warm water and soap; do not touch your eyes unless necessary. use someone else's eyeshadow or mascara.

  • - Try to store your cosmetics in a dark and cool place, this could be a case, box, suitcase, closet, bedside table, desk drawer, etc.
  • - Wash your hands before using cosmetics.
  • - For long-term storage, try to close tightly, tighten the lid after use
  • - Do not forget to mark the date of opening of cosmetics, this can be a marker.
  • - In case of an eye infection or allergy, be sure to replace the cosmetics with high-quality ones with a recent release date.
  • - Don’t take risks and don’t buy cosmetics in jars, even if you like their appearance (this will eliminate the possibility of buying a product with bacteria brought in by hand).
  • - Avoid storing cosmetics in sunlight and in the bathroom (humid place).
  • - Strictly use only your own cosmetic bag.
  • - Do not “pump air” into the bottle of mascara.
  • - Try not to purchase cosmetics with opened packaging.
  • - Always remember that increased temperature and humidity reduce the shelf life of cosmetics.

When purchasing cosmetics, if you see a date and a sticky spot next to it, this is a warning sign that the date may have been re-stickered.

Expiration date of lipstick

A woman should always have a tube of her favorite lipstick on hand. It will lift your spirits and give you self-confidence without any extra hassle. But, like any cosmetics, lipstick does not last forever. If you were unable to use it on time, alas, you will have to part with your treasured tube. A spoiled product will not only not improve your well-being, but can cause significant harm to your beauty and health. So what is the shelf life of lipstick, so as not to harm your health?

How to determine the expiration date of lipstick?

It’s very simple, many will decide. The expiration date of the lipstick is indicated on the packaging. However, do not forget that the manufacturer's labeling usually indicates how long the product remains fresh, provided that it is not opened. When lipstick is printed and used, it begins to actively deteriorate.

According to regulations introduced in 2005 in the European Union, cosmetic products must now have a sell-by date from the moment of unpacking. Look on the packaging for a stylized drawing of a jar with a slightly open lid - there will be a number on top of it, which indicates the desired date.

If you buy domestic brand products, be careful with the date of manufacture. You can find the markings both on the product box and on the bottle itself. We must not forget that the shelf life is indicated subject to all conditions, and they are rarely absolutely ideal in real life.

The shelf life of the lipstick after opening is months. Liquid lipsticks and glosses last even less - 10 months. But lip liners can “remain in use” for up to three years.

What factors influence the safety of the product?

Although experts recommend not to neglect safety rules and throw away all cosmetics after the recommended period of use, it is possible to extend the life of your favorite product, within reasonable limits. The main thing is to know what factors are best to avoid, what conditions you should strive for.

You can extend the shelf life of lipstick if you store it in a cool place under a tightly closed cap. Under no circumstances should you allow solid lipstick to melt, and liquid lipstick will not benefit from extreme heat. If the product has changed its smell and consistency, if the lipstick core has swollen and began to crumble when pressed or, on the contrary, has dried out, and the gloss has become viscous or too liquid, you will have to throw it away immediately.

What does lipstick contain?

A close acquaintance with all its components will help you better understand your favorite product. Why does lipstick have a longer shelf life than many other cosmetics? Because most lipsticks are made from natural oils, without the use of water. This allows them to stay fresh for a long time, and this is why they are so afraid of heat and prefer cold. Hence the phenomenon familiar to many, that unpleasant smell that appears when lipstick disappears.

The advantages of the absence of water in the lipstick stem include the fact that because of this, bacteria do not persist or multiply on the product. However, you should not use a decorative product during herpes or give it to a friend for a while. This can also shorten the shelf life of your lipstick.

Some lip glosses contain water, which is why they last much less. To maintain shine, you will have to monitor it much more carefully. Do not allow foreign substances or debris to get into the bottle, close it tightly, wipe the brush if possible and, of course, also put it on the refrigerator shelf if you do not need it at hand. Here you should be as careful as possible and not try to use the product after the expiration date, no matter how favorite it may be.

Shelf life of cosmetics - when should you throw away your favorite lipstick?

Not long ago, at the end of 2010, British scientists conducted a study, the results of which were shocking. It turns out that most women continue to use their favorite cosmetics even after their expiration date, and fifteen percent do not even know that cosmetic products can go bad. Meanwhile, the shelf life of any cosmetics - both decorative and intended for skin care - is very important: the ingredients included in the cosmetic formula over time can not only lose their effectiveness, but, moreover, become dangerous to the skin. It has long been proven that spoiled cosmetics are not only ineffective, but also harmful to the skin - such cosmetics can cause an allergic reaction and skin irritation.

The shelf life of cosmetics depends on what ingredients and preservatives are included in its composition. As a rule, the shelf life of most cosmetic products is up to three years, but, in fact, it is different for each type of cosmetics. So, for example, if you can use eyeliner pencil Eyeliner: fashion for clear contours for up to three years, then it is recommended to change mascara every four months.

Any cosmetic formula contains special ingredients - preservatives, sometimes even five or six different substances that inhibit the growth of bacteria. When the effect of preservatives ends, cosmetics become an ideal environment for the rapid growth of bacteria, and the use of such cosmetics can have the most negative impact on the skin - causing allergies and skin irritation.

Natural cosmetics require special attention - such products contain much less chemical substances that serve as preservatives, and therefore the shelf life of natural cosmetics Natural, bio or ecological cosmetics - how to figure it out? far less. In addition, due to the large number of natural, organic ingredients in such cosmetics, bacteria in them multiply faster - which means that natural cosmetics deteriorate faster and, when the shelf life expires, can be even more harmful to the skin.

  • Concealer: up to 12 months;
  • Powder: up to 2 years;
  • Creams and concealers with gel consistency: up to 12 months;
  • Moisturizing lotions: 3-12 months. Moisturizers, especially those based on natural ingredients - for example, essential oils and plant extracts - must be used as quickly as possible, since such cosmetics deteriorate very quickly;
  • Eyeliner pencil: up to 3 years;
  • Eye shadow: up to 3 years;
  • Foundation for makeup: months depending on the cosmetic formula. Water-based foundations will last up to 12 months, and oil-based foundations will last up to 18 months. It is best to buy foundation in two different shades for different seasons: in summer, when the skin takes on a darker, tanned tone, you will need a darker shade, and in winter, you will need a lighter shade. If your water-based foundation dries out before the expiration date, you can add a few drops of alcohol-free toner to the bottle and shake a few times to mix the liquids.
  • Lip liner: up to 3 years;
  • Lipstick: some cosmetologists claim that the shelf life of lipstick Lipstick: history and composition is 1-2 years, others - that lipstick does not deteriorate for a longer period, up to 4 years. In any case, if the lipstick changes its smell, you should throw it away immediately. It is believed that if you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer.
  • Mascara: being an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria, mascara has the shortest shelf life - experts recommend changing mascara every 4 months. Never add water or other liquids to dried mascara.
  • Nail polish: up to 12 months, depending on the quality of the cosmetics and the frequency of its use.

Not only cosmetics have their own expiration date, but also cosmetic brushes and sponges for applying them. The cosmetic sponge should not be used for more than a month, and it must be cleaned of any remaining powder or foundation weekly by washing it with mild soap or shampoo. Brushes and applicators for applying makeup also need careful care: they should also be washed with liquid soap or shampoo in warm water every two to three months.

All women use cosmetics, but many do not know that each product has its own shelf life and you should not use expired cosmetics, this can cause great harm to your skin. The expiration date of cosmetic products is indicated on the packaging, but there is also an expiration date after opening the package. Store cosmetics according to the rules, then the expiration date of your favorite creams will be the same as indicated on the packaging.

Preservatives are added to many creams to increase their shelf life; with a minimum content of preservatives, the shelf life is also reduced. Such cosmetics should be stored in the refrigerator. You should not buy cosmetics in “economical” packaging, because often such packaging does not justify its worth.

Perfumery

The shelf life of perfumes is 5 years; even after opening the package, the shelf life does not change.
Perfume deteriorates when the alcohol evaporates and leaves greasy stains on clothes.

Cream

The shelf life of creams is 2-3 years; after opening the package, the cream should retain its properties for 2-3 years. But this is in the case of proper storage; if the cream is stored incorrectly, it can spoil in a month.
Spoiled cream changes the smell; you should not use such cream. You will cause great harm to your skin, allergic reactions and acne may occur.

Alcohol lotion

The shelf life of the lotion is 2-3 years, depending on the manufacturer, after opening 2-3 years.
When alcohol lotion goes bad, a sediment usually forms. This means that the neutral environment has become alkaline or acidic.

Eyeshadow

The shelf life of eye shadow is 3-5 years, after opening 12-18 months
Spoiled shadows are difficult to shade.

Pencils for eyes, eyebrows and lips

The shelf life of cosmetic pencils is 3 years, after opening 12-18 months
Damaged cosmetic pencils do not lie smoothly and their stems break.

Mascara

The shelf life of mascara is 3-4 years, after opening 3-6 months.
Spoiled mascara does not apply well, glues the eyelashes together and crumbles. Do not use spoiled mascara; it causes inflammation of the eye mucosa.

Eyeliner

The shelf life of the eyeliner is 3 years, after opening 6-12 months.
When it spoils, it does not adhere well and becomes thick.

Liquid blush

The shelf life of liquid blush is 3-4 years, after opening 6-12 months
Spoiled liquid blush changes smell.

Dry blush

The shelf life of the blush is 3 years, after opening 12-18 months
Damaged blush does not apply well to the skin.

Compact powder

The shelf life of most powders is 3 years, after opening 12-18 months
When the powder deteriorates, it begins to crumble and the smell changes.

Concealer

The shelf life of masking agents is 3 years, after opening 12-18 months. The first signs of a spoiled product: it rolls off on the skin, breaks.

However, first of all, the shelf life of lipstick still depends on how exactly it is stored. In this case, it is important to protect cosmetics from direct sunlight. Also, lipstick does not like high humidity, so it is better not to keep it in the bathroom. After each use, remember to close the cap tightly. Contact with air should always be minimal. It is quite possible to store lipstick at room temperature. But it’s still better not to put it on the windowsill, especially in the summer.

By placing lipstick in the refrigerator, you can extend the shelf life of cosmetics by one and a half times, compared to storage at room temperature. However, one clarification needs to be made here. Temperature changes for lipstick are undesirable. If you store it in the refrigerator, but use it regularly, then the shelf life will not only not increase, but, on the contrary, will decrease. This option is only good if you plan to save the rest of your favorite cosmetic product for some special occasion.

To find out the expiration date of the lipstick, just carefully examine the packaging. All manufacturers provide the relevant information, with the exception of cheap Chinese counterfeits. Let's talk about specific numbers. The shelf life largely depends on the type of cosmetic product. For example, for liquid lipstick it averages 3 years. If the package has already been opened, then you can use this product for 12 months. The shelf life of solid (regular) and hygienic lipstick is approximately the same. After opening the package, you can use such cosmetics for 10-12 months. These numbers are also relevant for felt-tip lipstick. If you do not open the packaging, the product can be stored for up to 3 years.

By the way, if you look at the products of different manufacturers, you will notice how different their expiration dates are. For example, products from inexpensive brands can be stored for 3 years if the packaging is not opened. This applies, for example, to Oriflame and Avon products. The shelf life of Faberlic and Pupa lipsticks is on average 24 months. Products from L'Oreal and Maybelline can be stored for 3 years. Dior lipsticks have the shortest shelf life. On average, products of this brand can be stored for up to one and a half years. After this, cosmetics lose most of their qualities.

If you do not have any information regarding the date of manufacture of the lipstick - and this option is quite possible - then you can understand whether the cosmetics have deteriorated or not by a number of characteristic signs. One of the alarm signals in this case is an unpleasant, pungent odor. If there is one, the cosmetic product should be immediately thrown into the trash. Examine the lipstick carefully. A leaking or, conversely, dried rod is a clear sign of deterioration. This is also indicated by cracks on the surface. Lipstick that has a white coating on its stem should also be thrown away immediately. A change in color or taste is another sign that cosmetics should not be used.

Analyze how lipstick is applied to your lips. If the layer is too dry, viscous or starts to roll off, it should be wiped off immediately. The lipstick itself must be thrown away. You should not risk your own health and use expired lipstick. Such cosmetics become simply dangerous. For example, expired products, even from well-known brands, may well provoke the development of infectious diseases with lesions on the lips, or an allergic reaction. Another serious potential threat is cheilitis. This is an allergic disease, the manifestations of which are redness of the lip border, detachment of the upper part of the skin and the appearance of cracks on the lips.

Cosmetics have an expiration date specified by the manufacturer. In Russia, this is stated in paragraph 4 of article 5 of the RF Law “On the Protection of Consumer Rights”. After its expiration, the product is unsuitable for use due to harm to health and life.

Mascara

The shelf life of mascara is 12-18 months from the production date. From the moment of opening the period is reduced to 2-4 months. Because of exposure to high and low temperatures, environmental conditions, the product dries out or hardens. The composition of the carcass becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms. They get there during use and multiply when exposed to direct sunlight.

The expiration date is indicated by a thick or crumbly texture of the mascara, a sharp, unpleasant odor, changes in color and composition.

Powder

The shelf life of the powder is 1-1.5 years. Powder foundation stays fresh longer than cream/liquid foundation. During use, the powder contains fat secreted by the sebaceous glands of the facial skin, particles of cream and foundation. This is a favorable environment for microbes.

To extend the life of the powder:

  • do not apply it immediately after applying foundation;
  • wait until face cream or other skin products are absorbed.

Stop use if the color, texture or smell of the powder changes.

Concealer

The shelf life of foundations is 12-24 months. From the moment of opening, the terms are reduced to 6-12 months. Manufacturers indicate the storage method on the packaging. If temperature conditions are violated, for example, with direct exposure to sunlight, bacteria multiply faster. To limit the entry of microorganisms into the tube, use sponges and bottles with a dispenser. A new smell, color or change in the structure of the cream is grounds for stopping use.

Concealer

The product for concealing spots on the face is valid for 18 months. If the original settings of the concealer have changed, it should be thrown away. After opening, use the product for up to 6 months.

Blush

Manufacturers produce blush in the form of powder, cream-based and roll-on. Expiration dates have been established for each type:

  • compact powder blush – 2 years;
  • roll-on blush – 18-24 months;
  • powder blush – 12-24 months
  • cream or gel based blush – up to 12 months.

Eyeshadow

The shelf life of compact/pressed eyeshadows is 6–12 months. Cream shadows last less: 3–6 months. Due to the risk of infection in the eyes when using shadows, change the devices for applying them more often. Do not use shadows if you have infectious eye diseases. If this happens, it is better to throw the product away.

Signs of unsuitability: unpleasant odor, change in color and structure.

Lipstick

The service life of lipstick is 1 year, lip gloss is 9-12 months. Before this time has elapsed, lipstick or gloss may deteriorate due to non-compliance with storage conditions. Do not use lipstick or gloss if you have a lip infection.

Signs of unsuitability: unpleasant odor, rancid taste, change in texture - the appearance of grains, peeling and change in color shade.

Nail polish

The shelf life of varnishes is 2 years. It shrinks after opening and using it.

Signs of unsuitability: thickened texture and change in original properties.

Application accessories

Brushes, sponges and other devices for applying decorative cosmetics to the skin have expiration dates specified by the manufacturer. It all depends on the material from which they are made and the factors taken into account by the manufacturer when setting the expiration date. There is also a period of use - for brushes - 1 year; for sponges – 1 month.

Rules for storage and use

Proper storage and use of decorative cosmetics will save money on purchasing new products:

  1. Store at the temperature specified by the manufacturer on the packaging, and do not allow temperature changes.
  2. Maintain personal hygiene when applying products to the skin, keep devices - brushes, sponges - clean, and do not give them to strangers.
  3. Wash your sponges in warm soapy water after use and do not let them dry, and wash your brushes once a week.
  4. Do not use cosmetics if you have infectious diseases of the skin of the face, eyes, or lips.
  5. Stop using cosmetics that have lost their properties - color, smell, appearance.
  6. Do not use decorative cosmetics that have expired.

There are tragic moments in the life of every woman: you have to tear out affection from your heart and spend long days learning to live on without it... For example, this pink lipstick - you have been together since high school, remember the ups and downs, you have a common history! May be enough? Yesterday's bread goes stale, milk turns sour, stale meat can cause poisoning - do you really think that cosmetics don't spoil? Everything has an expiration date, and the contents of your cosmetic bag are no exception.

Many cosmetic products are potentially dangerous, and most often this means that after their shelf life expires, they either become downright toxic or can, at a minimum, cause allergies; or are gradually colonized by harmful bacteria and become carriers of infections. You should not regret cosmetics that have expired - even the most expensive and high-quality products can cause serious problems. And it’s not the manufacturer’s fault here.

There are several general rules for all cosmetic products.

  • The most important thing: never allow other people to use your cosmetics - it is unhygienic.
  • Store all cosmetics in a cool place out of direct sunlight and do not allow the products to heat up or freeze.
  • Take cosmetics only with clean hands, do not leave the products open for a long time.
  • Do not use your fingers to scoop products directly from the jar.
  • Remember that microorganisms can settle not only in products, but also in the devices you use to apply them: wash sponges and brushes in warm soapy water, sponges after each use, brushes once a week. By the way, brushes need to be changed once a year, sponges – once a week.
  • If you've had any infections on your face—especially those involving your eyes and lips—throw away any products you used while you were sick.

Cosmetics should be thrown away if

  • The product's smell has changed/appeared
  • the consistency of the product has changed - it has thickened or, conversely, thinned out
  • the product has become heterogeneous - it has stratified, grains, flakes, and suspension have appeared in its structure

If you notice an adverse reaction to any cosmetics, stop using them immediately. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

How to find out the expiration date of cosmetics

Manufacturers are required to indicate the expiration date of the product on the packaging - both on the box and directly on the bottle/tube. It must be remembered that the shelf life of cosmetics in unopened packaging differs significantly from the shelf life of cosmetics that are used: for example, after a bottle of foundation has been unsealed, its shelf life is 6-12 months, depending on the manufacturer. And when sealed in its original packaging in a cool, dark place, the foundation can be stored for up to three years.

  • The expiration date of cosmetics after printing is usually marked with a characteristic icon - a typical cosmetic jar with an open lid. The number printed on top of this jar is the number of months during which, subject to storage conditions, the manufacturer guarantees the quality of the product.

In addition, if you purchase imported cosmetics (those that were imported into your country from abroad), please note: the correct expiration date is indicated by the factory (embossed or laser) on the bottle/tube, and not on the translation sticker - it is attached local importing company.

However, all these factory notes are for ideal conditions, but in real life there are temperature changes and unpleasant surprises. Therefore, when determining whether your cosmetics are suitable, pay attention to subjective feelings. And, of course, our advice will help you.

Mascara

You need to be especially vigilant with decorative cosmetics for the eyes, because they are used dangerously close to the eyes: itching, redness, lacrimation, conjunctivitis - this is not only unpleasant, but also fraught with consequences for vision. If even your favorite mascara suddenly changes its smell (for example, it starts to resemble gasoline), throw it away without regret. Most likely it has gone bad. And this is forever.

Eyelashes are designed to protect the eyes from dust, and, consequently, various germs. A lot of these small, unfriendly creatures settle on your eyelashes, and after you paint them with mascara, some of the “travelers” move to the brush, and then into the bottle. Over time, they meet people like themselves there, start families, breed and multiply... And your eyes begin to itch and swell from this family idyll.

  • The shelf life of decorative eye cosmetics is very short: for hygienic purposes, mascara and liquid eyeliner need to be changed every two to four months, at least. Most often, by this time the mascara has already begun to dry out.

Eyeliner: Sharpen it often, you'll literally scrape off a lot of germs.

Foundations

Foundation

All liquid foundations contain water and, despite the amount of preservatives, silicones and stabilizers that manufacturers generously added, microorganisms multiply in water. They can cause irritation and even acne.

In order to avoid this, purchase foundations in bottles with dispensers - this will not only protect against harmful bacteria, but also reduce the access of air, and, therefore, slow down the oxidation process.

Store liquid foundations at normal humidity to avoid drying them out.

  • Depending on the composition, packaging and manufacturer, the foundation can be stored for 5 to 12 months after printing.

Concealer

A product designed to disguise blemishes on the face can itself create them: if the concealer thickens, it will be extremely difficult to blend it out. Plus, old concealer can act like a chameleon, changing shade whenever it wants. Well, the fact that bacteria can multiply in it is already clear.

  • The shelf life of the concealer is no more than 18 months.

Powder is a long-lasting product in your cosmetic bag, because it is a powder, and, most often, it contains neither water nor oils. However, any powder is hygroscopic - so keep your powder tightly sealed and in a dry place. But even with all possible precautions, moisture from the air and fat from the brushes get into the powder, which, in combination with plant extracts, creates a wonderful nutrient medium for the proliferation of a wide variety of bacilli.

If you want to extend the life of your powder, don't apply it right after your foundation/moisturizer, let the base set, otherwise the brush will pick up some of the base product and transfer it into the powder.

  • The powder is not stored for more than two years; The average shelf life of powder is 18 months.

Blush comes in different varieties - pressed, powdery, cream, and in balls. Each type has its own vagaries and expiration dates.

Powder blush behaves almost the same as powder, so the dangers and precautions are identical.

  • The shelf life of powder blush does not exceed 18 months.
  • Compact ones can last a little longer - up to two years.
  • With proper storage, blush balls, the so-called meteorites, will last for two years.
  • Cream and gel blush behave similarly to concealer, and their shelf life does not exceed one and a half years.

Eyeshadow

Be very careful with eye shadow - although you do not apply it directly to the mucous membrane of the eye, there is still a high risk of transmitting infection. They can harbor colonies of harmful microbes without any noticeable signs of contamination.

According to statistics, eye shadow is second only to mascara in terms of the frequency of allergic reactions!

  • Depending on the manufacturer, pressed eyeshadow will last you anywhere from three months to a year. Cream ones - even less, about 4-5 months.

Lipsticks and glosses

The wrong color can ruin your mood, but, according to experts, if you follow the rules for using decorative cosmetics for lips (do not share with a friend, do not use during an exacerbation of herpes), then microbes rarely prefer to settle on lipsticks - they do not contain water, but, like It is known from a school biology course that where there is no water, there is no life.

If the lipstick has a bad smell (due to fats in the composition, which can go rancid), it gives an uneven coverage, has become harsh when applied, and the lip gloss is too liquid or, on the contrary, has become viscous - sadly, it’s time to get rid of them say goodbye

  • Usually lipstick lasts about a year, gloss - 8 - 10 months.

Nail polish

Microbes have not yet been discovered on Earth that can survive in nail polish... But what cannot rot, most often can simply dry out - this is the problem with all nail polishes. Without a doubt, you can dilute it - for example, with acetone. But will it be good for your poor nails?

  • High-quality nail polishes usually last for about a year.
